Occasionally Excel office 7 stops working while in use. Message comes up that excel is restarting. Worksheet becomes read only. Why

When using Excel Office 7 for worsheets it stops working.  The task bar at the top does not work and I cannot save except to close out the worksheet.  Sometimes the document becomes read only and I have not statused it that way.  I must close out the worksheet,
go out of excel and return and it sometimes works.  Driving me mad.

Run CHKDSK
  • Go to the Start button.
  • In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • Reboot your computer.
