Original Title: After installing Windows 8.1, whenever my computer sleeps, it reboots
 
I have been extremely frustrated after upgrading to 8.1.  Whenever my computer lies dormant, or I actually choose to put it in sleep mode so that I can come back to what I was working on, the computer shuts down and reboots when I log back in.  Please advise
and let me know what is going on.  Many thanks.

This issue may occur due to corrupted display driver, due to corrupted power plan or due to conflict between third party applications.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Method 1:
I would suggest you to uninstall the display driver and install latest display driver from the computer manufacturer website.
 
Step 1: Uninstall display driver.
a) Right-click on the
Start Button and click on Device manager.

b) Double-click on
Display Adapters to expand.
c) Right click on the
display adapter driver that is listed and select properties.
d) In the window opened, click on drivers tab.
e) In the
drivers tab, Click on Uninstall option.

Step 2:
Install latest display driver from the computer manufacturer website and check if it helps.

Method 2:
If the issue persists, I would suggest you to
restore the power plans to default and check if it helps.

a) Right-click on
Start button and click on Command Prompt (Admin).
b) In the command prompt, type
powercfg –restoredefaultschemes and hit Enter.
c) Exit command prompt.
 
Note: This would reset the power plan settings to default.
Any customized power plans are would be removed.

Method 3:
If the issue persists, I would suggest you to set the computer in a clean boot and check if it helps.

Setting the system in a clean boot state will help to identify if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Machine Throttling

• Click the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "regedit" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Look for the following registry key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions".
• On the right window pane, delete the subkey: "Machine Throttling".
• Restart your system.
