concatination in formulas
Hi,
I have searched for an answer on this for a while, and I'm frustrated because I know it has to be easy, but for some reason im not finding any answers.
I am using the following vlookup formula to find data in another spreadsheet.
=IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A4,'Z:\~path\05 May 2013\05-12-2013\[pto-xxx1.xls]Sheet1'!$C$5:$D$58,2,0),"")
Here is my dilemna..
Every week the date changes...
to the next sunday..
so its shows
05 May 2013\05-12-2013 then the next week it will be
05 May 2013\05-19-2013
05 May 2013\05-26-2013
06 Jun 2013\06-02-2013
etc
Now I have other fields where I have this data separated
For instance:
U12 = 2013 (which i pull from another page)
U13 = 05 May 2013 (which i also pull from another page)
U14 = 05-19-2013 (which i pull from this formula ...
=TEXT('Main Page'!B1,"mm-dd-yyyy")(yes from another page)
Basically I've extracted in those 3 different cells the date in different appearances...
What i need to do is write a formula to put them all together...
and make it actually work, so when I change the date on the mage page (which is done through a Macro
when i setup the file) it will change my link above to reflect the new date, so I don't have to each and everytime edit the link manually.
I had tried...
do do it like this, but it simply doesn't work...
=IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A4,'Z:\~path\" & U12 & "\" & U13 & "\"&U14 &"\[pto-xxx1.xls]Sheet1'!$C$5:$D$58,2,0),"")
Without the Iferror part, it shows up as #NA and in evaluation of the formula
Basically what this formula does it A4 is a column with a date say (05/19/2013) (that it gets from the mainpage in the form of ='Main Page'!B1) and the rows under it are A4+1, etc..
(it will go into this pto-xxx1.xls file and return the value in column 2
which is (number of PTO hours that day that are approved...
The other spreadsheet looks like this...
A B C D
05/19/2013 78.26
05/20/2013 128.22
05/21/2013 98.55
etc
Ive even played with it, and tried the following...
unsuccessfully..
I'm not sure if its actually having a problem with the concatination or if its actually having a problem with the A4 (because it converts it to 41413 instead of 05/19/2013 (so that may
be the problem..
not sure)..
Anyway, I've tried this formula as well..
=VLOOKUP(A4,'Z:\~path\" & TEXT('Main Page'!B1, "Yyyy") & "\" & TEXT('Main Page'!B1, "mm Mmm Yyyy") & "\" & TEXT('Main Page'!B1,"mm-dd-yyyy") & "\[pto-xxx1.xls]Sheet1'!$C$5:$D$70,2,0)
(oh and i pulled out the iferror just to make it easier to break apart...)
Basically all that does is use the formulas i used to get the date in that order, but without using different cells in this same page.
I know this has to be simple...
Its just driving me insane!!
Thanks for any help!
Charles

A macro could be written to open the external workbook and at this point a better idea of what is to be accomplished is required.
The macro could dump the workbook's contents to one or more worksheets, custom name the worksheet(s) and hide the worksheet(s).
They could then be referenced with a conventional INDIRECT() to the custom named worksheet.
If only a small handful of values was required, a User Defined Function could be written to pull the values directly into a small number of cells.
The trouble with this is that the external workbook has to be opened, read and closed for every retrieval.
Post back with a little more information on what is required and some help could be supplied in writing a custom macro or function.
FWIW, I find it odd that you are allowed macros but not approved add-ons.
Seems like a security hole to me but I wouldn't go pointing that out to Mordac.
Manually editing the Windows registry
Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!
Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):
- Click the Start button.
- Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
- While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
- You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
- Click Yes.
- A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
- Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
- In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
- From the File menu, choose Export.
- In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
- In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
- In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
- Click Save.
- The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
- You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
