I got an ASUS with Windows 7 in late July - I have been having intermittent problems: Microsoft Office Starter doesnt work, problems with connection to wireless (which now seems to work - thank you for your support), and now this.
I turn off the laptop
from the Start Icon.
The screen says logging off and shutting down.
Then all the green lights turn off.
I unplug from AC, usually with between 30% to 90% battery left., then I close the lid.
Then a few hours later or even the next day, I see a green light blinking, lift the lid and the laptop turns on, waiting for my password.

To troubleshoot:
I looked on line - consensus seems to be task scheduler.
But I thought I would ask through this website.
There seems to be a lot of tasks being scheduled - can I delete all these tasks or schedule them all at once? There are some tasks that require multiple
things to happen before updating - even Gooogle apparently requires occassional updates.  Is it really the task scheduler or maybe a programming issue with the power or shutdown commands?

I have disconnected the wireless access before I shut down - which has resulted in even more problems as I cant even find networks within range when I turn on.
I have also stopped automatic Windows 7 updates - only manually updating after I turn on the laptop
and get the wireless connection going.

I changed the power settings, so that it shuts down when i press the power button or when I close the lid.

I asked a computer consultant - who said take it back to Best Buys - I asked them without taking the laptop in - and first impression is possibly a virus - I am using Kaspersky.
The only way it appears not to turn itself on again is if I drain the battery - which has happened when I dont get on for awhile; then I get the system shutdown screen.
I hate to take the laptop back and have the Geek Squad look at it - but will if no one has better answers.
What a waste of battery.

Please check your PC manual - you might have no problem at all.  A blinking green light might indicate that the system is in sleep mode [mine does this, just as an example].  The fact that the computer turns on when you lift the lid also sounds to be like
it was in sleep mode*.  The fact that you can leave it until the next day also indicates that it was sleeping as no battery can keep the PC in any other state for that length of time.
If the manual is not clear about this then check the Asus support site & forums [if they have forums].
Please post back with the results of these checks.  In addition, * [above] does the PC come back on in a second or two as this also indicates that it was in sleep mode [or how long does it take?]

Tweak IE Options

• Open Internet Explorer.
• Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
• Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
• Click "Apply".
  
• Reboot your computer.
