Is there some restriction against creating/recording a Macro in Word 2010 (Windows 7) that thereafter automatically formats certain pre-selected text in a Word document--at the touch of an assigned shortcut key--by adding "text effects" to that specific,
pre-selected text, such as, e.g., text "shadow," or text "outline"?

I'm no expert at recording macros, or at using or manipulating VBA code for that matter, but I
do generally know how to create & record macros, and I currently have several similar macros saved to my "normal.dotm" template which, unlike the one described above, continue to work just fine.

For example, in attempting to solve this issue myself, just as an experiment, I created & recorded a sample/test macro which, instead of automatically formatting the pre-selected text with specific "text effects" (e.g., text "shadow" or "outline," etc.), simply
automatically bolds the pre-selected text; this basic recorded macro works just fine--i.e., it can thereafter be applied to any other text in a Word document by simply selecting the target text and then hitting the assigned keyboard shortcut. What
I haven't been able to figure out is why this basic macro works just fine whereas the macro described originally above for auto-adding/inserting certain, more advanced "text effects" (i.e., "shadow" or "outline," etc.) doesn't seem to work at all.

If anyone can offer any help or guidance with this issue, I'd truly appreciate it!

There are several kinds of styles.
The kind you're talking about is a paragraph
style.
Another kind, a character style, applies only to the selected text (as little as one character) and does not affect the rest of the paragraph.

Word's Character Styles for more info.

If you use the "Save Selection as a New Quick Style" item on the Styles gallery and just click OK in the little dialog where you enter the new style's name, you'll get a paragraph style -- which cannot be changed later into a character style.
If you go through
that dialog, you must click the Modify button instead of the OK button; in the large dialog, you change the Style Type dropdown to say Character.

An alternative is to open the Styles pane and click the New Style button at the bottom left of the pane, which gets you to the same large dialog (and again you have to change the Style Type setting).

Manually editing the Windows registry

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!

To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):

Click the Start button.
Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
Click Yes.
A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
From the File menu, choose Export.
In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
Click Save.
The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
