Fast Solution to Error: Apps in Windows 8.1

Apps in Windows 8.1

I just bought my computer yesterday and got it all set up, but very few if any of the apps on the start page are working.
If I click to open, it starts to load then goes back to the screen, or opens but won't allow you to click anything or navigate, or
loads to a certain point but won't go further.
What do I do?

Hi Morgan,
Please answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue.
-          On which apps are you facing this issue?
-          Do you have proxy internet connection?
This issue could be caused either by faulty apps, proxy internet connection or 3rd party software interference.
Let us follow these methods one by one and check if you are able to access or open the app.
Method 1.
Let’s run the Apps Troubleshooter and
check if that helps.
The Apps Troubleshooter is an automated tool which we have developed to address a number of known issues that can prevent the Apps from running properly.
This troubleshooter automatically fixes some issues, including suboptimal screen
resolution, incorrect security or account settings etc.
If issue persists, refer to the remaining steps from the help article and check if this helps to open the app.
What to do if you have problems with an app:
Method 2.
You may temporarily disable third party security programs, if there are any installed.
If you need assistance, please contact their technical support to disable the software and then check if you still face trouble with the apps.
Disclaimer: If you have to temporarily disable the antivirus to install other software; you should enable the antivirus as soon as you're done.
If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software
is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to virus attacks.
Method 3.
If you are connected to the Internet using proxy settings, then Windows 8 Apps do not connect to the Internet and work as expected.
Try disabling the proxy connection and check if this helps.
Follow the steps to disable proxy:
a) Press “Windows Logo” + “R” keys on the keyboard, type “inetcpl.cpl” and press “Enter”.
b) Click the “Connections” tab, and then click “LAN settings”.
c) Uncheck the “Use a proxy server for your LAN” check box.
d) Click “Ok”.
Reply with the status of the issue and we will be glad to offer our assistance.

Manually editing the Windows registry

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  • While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  • You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  • Click Yes.
  • A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
  • Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
  • In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
  • From the File menu, choose Export.
  • In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
  • In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
  • In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
  • Click Save.
  • The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
  • You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
