My original computer was damaged beyond repair, but I have a backup on an external drive.
 The new system will be running Win 7 64-bit, same as the original. I understand that I will need to re-install all of the programs.
 But will
I be able to use the backup to restore my files to the new computer?

Run CHKDSK

  • Go to the Start button.
  • In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • Reboot your computer.

"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."
